How to Choose a Solar Inverter for Your Home

The solar inverter is one of the most important components of a solar and battery system. It converts the electricity generated by your solar panels into electricity that can be used throughout your home.

However, choosing the right inverter is not simply about finding the biggest model or the lowest price. Your roof, electricity supply, system size, shading, battery plans and local network requirements can all affect which inverter may suit your property.

Here is what you should consider when comparing your options.

What Does a Solar Inverter Do?

Solar panels generate direct current, or DC, electricity. Australian homes and appliances use alternating current, or AC, electricity.

The inverter converts the DC electricity from your solar panels into AC electricity that can be:

  • Used by appliances throughout your home
  • Used to charge a compatible home battery
  • Exported to the electricity grid
  • Monitored through an inverter display or connected app

The inverter also helps manage the performance and safe operation of the solar system.

Because so much of the system depends on it, inverter quality, compatibility and after-sales support are important considerations.

What Are the Main Types of Solar Inverters?

There are several inverter options available for Australian homes. The right one will depend on how your solar panels are arranged, the amount of shading on your roof and whether you want to include a battery.

String Inverters

A string inverter connects a group, or string, of solar panels to one central inverter. It is normally installed on a wall near the switchboard and electricity meter.

String inverters are the most common option for household solar systems. They are generally reliable, cost-effective and easy to access for servicing.

They often work well when:

  • Solar panels face similar directions
  • The roof receives consistent sunlight
  • There is limited shading
  • The system has a relatively straightforward design

If one panel in a string is heavily shaded, it can affect the output of other panels in that string. A well-designed system can help reduce this impact by grouping panels with similar sunlight and orientation.

Microinverters

Microinverters are installed on the roof, with one connected to each solar panel. This allows every panel to operate more independently.

Microinverters may suit properties with:

  • Partial or changing shade
  • Panels installed across several roof sections
  • Different roof directions or angles
  • A need for detailed panel-level monitoring

If one panel is shaded or develops a fault, the other panels can continue operating independently.

Power Optimisers

Power optimisers are installed with individual solar panels but work with a central string inverter.

An optimiser system may provide a middle ground between a standard string inverter and a complete microinverter system. Its suitability will depend on the roof design, products used and overall system cost.

Hybrid Inverters

A hybrid inverter combines the functions of a solar inverter and battery inverter in one unit. It can manage electricity from the solar panels, battery, home and grid.

A hybrid inverter may be a suitable option when installing solar and a compatible battery at the same time. It can also provide a pathway for adding a compatible battery later, although future compatibility should always be confirmed before purchasing.

Not every hybrid inverter works with every battery. Ask which batteries are compatible, what additional equipment may be needed and whether the proposed setup can provide backup power during an outage.

Battery Inverters

If you are adding a battery to an existing solar system, you may be able to keep your current solar inverter and install a separate battery inverter.

This is known as an AC-coupled battery system. It can be a practical option for homes that already have solar and want to add storage without replacing the existing solar inverter.

The best configuration will depend on your current system, battery choice, energy needs and backup requirements.

What Should You Look for in a Solar Inverter?

The Right Size

The inverter needs to be correctly matched with the capacity of the solar panels, the property’s electricity use and the manufacturer’s specifications.

A bigger inverter is not automatically better. In many Australian systems, the total solar panel capacity is higher than the inverter capacity. This can help the system generate more electricity during lower-light periods while keeping the inverter working efficiently.

The proposed design must comply with product specifications, Australian requirements and the connection rules of your local electricity network.

Your Roof and Shading

The number of roof sections, panel directions and amount of shading can influence which inverter technology will work best.

A straightforward, unshaded roof may suit a string inverter. A roof with multiple orientations, trees, chimneys or changing shade may benefit from microinverters or power optimisers.

A professional system design should account for these conditions before equipment is recommended.

Single-Phase or Three-Phase Power

Your property’s electricity supply affects the inverter options available.

A single-phase property requires a single-phase inverter. A three-phase property may use either a single-phase or three-phase inverter, depending on the system design and local network requirements.

Three-phase inverters can offer more power capacity, but they generally cost more and are not automatically necessary for every three-phase home.

Your Battery Plans

If you want a home battery now or may add one later, discuss this before choosing the inverter.

A hybrid inverter may simplify a new solar and battery installation, while a separate battery inverter may be more suitable when adding storage to an existing solar system.

Important questions include:

  • Which batteries are compatible?
  • Can a battery be added later?
  • Can the system provide backup power?
  • Will backup cover the entire home or selected circuits?
  • How will the system work on a three-phase property?

Solar panels do not normally continue powering a home during a blackout unless the system includes a compatible battery and backup configuration.

Local Network Requirements

Electricity networks can place limits on:

  • The amount of electricity exported to the grid
  • The way the inverter communicates with the network

These rules vary depending on your location and electricity distributor.

The inverter is one of the components most likely to need attention during the life of a solar system.

  • Whether local technicians and replacement parts are available

The inverter’s location can affect its performance and lifespan.

A string or hybrid inverter should generally be installed in a shaded, well-ventilated position close to the switchboard. Direct sunlight and excessive heat can affect performance and may reduce the life of the equipment.

The location should also allow safe access for servicing and maintenance.

There is no single inverter that is best for every Australian home.

The right choice depends on:

  • Are local network connection and export limits included in the design?

The quote should clearly identify the proposed inverter, system capacity, warranties, installation location and any additional electrical work that may be required.
