Labor’s Big Battery Plan: What It Means for You
The Albanese Labor Government has announced a bold new commitment to slash energy costs and boost Australia’s clean energy future—and it’s great news for households, small businesses, and community facilities alike.
From 1 July 2025, Labor’s $2.3 billion Cheaper Home Batteries Program will make it easier and more affordable than ever to install a home battery. The goal? Over one million new batteries installed by 2030—giving more Aussies control over their energy use and bills.
How Much Could You Save?
• Already have rooftop solar? You could save up to $1,100 per year
• Installing solar + battery? Savings could hit $2,300 per year
• Up to 90% off your typical electricity bill
With a 30% discount on battery installation (around $4,000 on a standard 11.5kWh system), this program is a game-changer—especially as energy prices continue to fluctuate.
How It Works
• The program will use the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme, which has already helped millions of Australians go solar.
• Discounts apply to Virtual Power Plant (VPP)-ready systems, allowing homes to store solar power for use any time.
• The savings extend beyond your home—by easing peak demand, it helps reduce prices for everyone on the grid.
• You can even combine the discount with state-level subsidies and other federal programs.
Who Can Apply?
• Homeowners with new or existing solar
• Small businesses
• Community facilities (e.g., libraries, sports clubs, local centres – batteries up to 100kWh, with subsidies for up to 50kWh)
This initiative supports greater energy resilience—especially important during extreme weather events or outages.
Part of a Bigger Picture
The battery plan is one piece of a broader clean energy strategy that includes:
• $150 in direct energy bill relief for households and small businesses
• $1 billion Household Energy Upgrades Fund for modern, efficient appliances
• $800 million for social housing energy upgrades
• $100 million for community energy efficiency projects
Why It Matters
Battery storage allows you to store excess solar energy and use it when the sun isn’t shining—at night, on rainy days, or during blackouts. That means:
• Less reliance on the grid
• Smaller power bills
• A cleaner, more reliable energy future
Final Thoughts
Australia leads the world in rooftop solar, but battery uptake has lagged behind—only 1 in 40 households have one. This initiative could help change that.
