Discover facts, benefits, and insights into your solar battery system.
At Nectr, our product development begins with the customer. That’s why over the past few months, the Nectr team has been talking to everyday Australians about how household solar and battery bundles can kick-start their journey to energy savings.
Interestingly, despite Aussies being amongst the highest adopters of rooftop solar in the world, there are still many misconceptions and myths that exist about the benefits.
Nectr has listed the top five solar and battery myths the team regularly 'bust':
Myth #1: Solar and battery systems are expensive, and the cost-saving benefits take too long to come through.
Truth: In most cases, your investment in solar and battery systems can save you money over the midterm. Nectr offers best-in-market deals and financial packages (including interest-free, no upfront costs, and simple monthly payment plans) that help customers pay off their new energy investment faster. This means these systems can be seen as “cost-neutral” on your household energy budget within a competitive three to five years. Additionally, there are many Australian Government solar and battery incentives that are available to customers to help reduce the cost of installing solar panels.
Myth #2: Solar doesn’t work when it’s night-time or cloudy.
Truth: High-quality solar panels will produce energy even in low-light conditions meaning you can still reduce your reliance on the electricity grid during cloudy days – albeit less than full sun days. Your ability to store energy and rely on it during low-light days or at night is where adding a solar battery really makes sense. There is huge interest in home batteries, with a recent survey showing 84% of Australian solar owners who don’t currently own a household battery are interested in purchasing one in the next three years. So - if you have solar panels but no battery, it’s definitely worth giving Nectr a call to discuss your options.
Myth #3: I don’t use power during the day as I’m at work, so solar won’t save me money.
Truth: If you’re at home during the day, you’ll certainly reap the most benefits from solar power. However - those of us that are out of the house for most of the day can still make the most of solar energy, as it can offset the cost of your home’s baseload energy consumption. This includes running your refrigerator, appliances on standby, pool filters and security systems, to name a few. Using timers to run energy-greedy household appliances when your solar panels are generating energy can also help decrease your electricity bills.
Myth #4: Solar panels don’t work if they get dirty.
Truth: Did you know that the energy-generating difference between a clean and dirty solar panel is only around one percent? However, dirty solar panels aren’t very attractive, so it’s worth hosing them down when the panels are cool (eg. morning or evening) or booking in a professional clean to keep them looking good and working to maximum efficiency.
Myth #5: Solar panels take more energy to manufacture than they can produce.
Truth: Good quality solar panels definitely do not take more energy to produce than they generate. With advancements in manufacturing technology, the standard panel takes just over two years to pay itself back in terms of carbon cost (taking into account raw materials, transport, manufacturing, and product use). A high-quality solar system should last between 20 - 30 years, so a solar system should pay back its manufacturing energy costs almost 11 times over during its lifetime.
“The recent Melbourne and Brisbane Home Shows gave us a great opportunity to chat face-to-face with customers, and help bust some myths around Solar and Battery,” said Chief Marketing Officer Karren Challoner-Miles. “The feedback was very positive - and a lot of people we spoke with are now starting their journey to energy independence with Nectr.
