Want the 2026 Rebate? Do Not Leave It Too Late
If you want a solar battery installed on the current rebate, the calendar is now the thing to watch. The federal solar battery rebate steps down again from the start of 2027, and it is the install date that counts, not the day you order.
It is 1 October. That sounds like plenty of time, but getting from first enquiry to a switched-on system takes several weeks, and December is the busiest month of the year. Here is a shopping schedule to make sure you are installed, switched on, and on the 2026 rebate before the deadline.
Why the install date is the real deadline
The rebate is locked in by when your system is installed and switched on, not when you sign the quote or pay a deposit. To get the current, larger discount, your solar and battery has to be installed and commissioned in 2026.
That matters because the process is not instant. From your first quote to a working system, most homes take around 4 to 8 weeks, and a battery, or a slow network approval, can push that longer.
How long each step takes

Add it up and 4 to 8 weeks is normal, with some network areas longer. The network connection approval is the step you cannot rush, so it pays to start it early.
The catch: December shuts down early
Here is the part people miss. Even though the deadline is 31 December, the practical cut-off is earlier. December is the busiest month of the year for installers, between the pre-summer rush and everyone trying to beat the rebate, and many installers and network offices wind down or close over the Christmas and New Year period.
So you cannot count on a late-December install. Aim to be installed and switched on by mid-December, and treat anything later as a risk.

Starting later than October?
Left it a bit? You still have a chance, but the margin shrinks fast. If you are starting in November, move quickly, choose an installer with stock and spare capacity, and be flexible on install dates.
If you are starting in December, be upfront that you are chasing the 2026 rebate, and ask honestly, in writing, whether they can complete the install and switch-on in time before they take your deposit.
A few tips to avoid delays
- Get quotes now, while installers still have December slots left.
- Decide on the battery upfront, so the design and order are locked in one go rather than redone later.
- Have your recent bills and ID ready to speed up the paperwork.
- Choose an installer with equipment in stock, since supply delays are a common hold-up.
- Respond quickly to any paperwork, so your network approval is not left waiting on you.
Start now, not in December
The rebate does not care how close you came. It is set by the day your system switches on. Start the conversation in October, aim to sign by the end of the month, and target a mid-December install, and you give yourself the best chance of locking in the 2026 solar battery rebate with room to spare.
