What can we do to help this World Environment Day

World Environment Day is about taking time out of our busy schedules to consider the planet and the role we play as individuals. We all have a part to play in tackling issues that harm our environment. This isn’t about just one day.

At Nectr we hope through sharing information and initiatives about World Environment Day, we will inspire everyone to revaluate their daily actions and make conscious decisions to make way for a better future and restore our planet for many generations to come.

Here’s a handy overview of what you need to know about World Environment Day.

When is World Environment Day?

World Environment Day takes place annually on 5 June, and is a day known internationally about spreading environmental awareness. The United Nations introduced ‘World Environment Day’ back in 1974 and since then it has been hosted in a different country each year. This year it will be held in Pakistan.

What is the theme this year?

The main focus for 2021 is ‘’ecosystem restoration’’ and the Pakistan Government are planning to restore their forests over the next 5 years. In short, ecosystem restoration assists any ecosystem that has been damaged or destroyed, and also maintains the ones that are still intact. Thankfully, all kinds of ecosystems can be restored, damage to the environment can be reversed, which ultimately means a brighter future for all ecosystems.

Nectr will be looking into ecosystem restoration in more detail in our next blog, so keep an eye out!

What can we do on World Environment Day?

Many schools, businesses and communities take part in World Environment Day activities across Australia, and there are plenty of opportunities for you to take part and celebrate on the day.

Nectr has consolidated a list of ideas on how to get organised;

  • The planet is losing a football field of forest every 3 seconds. You can help by planting trees, plant native Australian flora and this will help the bees as well.
  • Contact your local council and get involved in planting trees within your local area
  • Volunteering for an existing restoration project or if you don’t have the time pledge a donation to support a restoration project
  • Host a beach clean-up to help keep the beaches plastic free and support endangered wildlife in our ocean
  • Walk or ride your bike to work, or if you are driving the kids to school, take a more environmentally friendly way once a week. It can also be a fun way to start your day.
  • Check out what is happening in your local areas or cities as there are many fund-raising events occurring around the country.

How can I celebrate World Environment Day at home?

Not only can you get involved in larger events held for World Environment Day, but you can take part and make a difference from the comfort of your own home. By making changes at home you can ensure they turn into conscious habits and not only make a difference on 5 June, but continue to impact changes on the environment every day.

Here’s a list of ideas and initiatives that you can implement at home:

  • Change your diet by eating more plant-based foods, there are so many delicious recipes to try, why not try one on World Environment Day
  • Travel less by walking or taking the bike if you only need to travel for a short distance. If you need to travel for work, try car-pooling or public transport to reduce your carbon footprint
  • Add green space in your garden to support natural ecosystems and help pollinators flourish
  • Reduce, reuse and recycle has always been an important factor to help our environment, many people already do and it’s important to continue to
  • Create a compost in your garden, or in a compost kit on your balcony and grow some of your own produce to become a more sustainable household
  • Buy locally produced foods and products, not only is a great way to support the environment but it is also a great way to support local businesses
  • Talk to your children about how they can contribute to the future of our ecosystem and how they can make daily sustainable choices

However you choose to celebrate World Environment Day, enjoy the day and don’t forget to spread awareness. Post across your social media platforms with the tag from the United Nations #GenerationRestoration and #WorldEnvironmentDay to show your support of this year’s theme.
